Perspective is the consciousness’ most influential lens, shaping the reality we perceive and the choices we make.

Imagine two siblings, Alex and Sam, who grew up in the same household but have very different outlooks on life:

Alex always sees the glass half-empty. When faced with challenges, he often feels overwhelmed and defeated. Alex deems life to be a constant struggle, focusing on what is lacking rather than what’s present. As a result, he frequently misses opportunities for growth and joy, inadvertently creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of dissatisfaction.

Sam, on the other hand, approaches life with curiosity and optimism. He views obstacles as chances to learn and grow. Sam deems life to be an exciting adventure filled with possibilities. This perspective allows him to find silver linings in difficult situations and to appreciate the small joys in everyday experiences.

Both siblings face similar circumstances, but their vastly different interpretations of events shape their realities. Alex’s negative outlook often leads to stress and missed opportunities, while Sam’s positive mindset helps him build resilience and find fulfillment.

“The whole universe is change and life itself is but what you deem it.”

A profound quote by Marcus Aurelius states that perspective shapes our reality. While life’s events unfold objectively, we, as inherently subjective beings, perceive the world through the lens of our own unique perspectives rather than in purely objective terms. This personal lens filtered every experience, profoundly influencing how we interpret and respond to the world around us.

Introverts and extroverts, for example, perceive the world through contrasting lenses, each painting life’s canvas with unique strokes. At a company team-building event, Sarah, an introvert, sees it through a lens of potential overwhelm and energy drain. Her perspective focuses on finding quiet moments for meaningful one-on-one conversations amidst the chaos. Mike, an extrovert, views the same event through a lens of excitement and opportunity, envisioning a canvas filled with vibrant social interactions and new connections.

So, how?

Reframing the Way You Think

Learning to shift your perspective so you see the world more accurately takes practice. Correcting distortions and misperceptions, such as “nothing ever works out for me”, you won’t inevitably won’t invest in your life with much confidence or effort. If you can come to see that, in fact, sometimes things work out and you are more likely to put in more effort towards yourself with a more hopeful attitude.

Robin Roberts, an American TV broadcaster came up –

  1. Reframe your thoughts: an easy way to
  2. Practice gratitude
  3. View situations from a different perspective
  4. Think from a macro level
  5. Remove negativity from your life
  6. Take care of your body
  7. Perform a good deed
